Shocking New Study Finds That Most Moms Can T Afford To Buy Diapers

A new study published in the journal Pediatrics reveals that 4 out of 5 American adults struggle to afford a child’s most basic necessity: diapers. The New Haven-based study, titled “Diaper Need and Its Impact On Child Health” completed by a group of Yale researchers, is the first of its kind to perform a peer-reviewed analysis that measures the psychological impact on a mother not able to afford diapers. They found that 30 percent of mothers have struggled to pay for diapers and more than 8 percent of low-income mothers have had to reuse soiled diapers on their children....

5 Lessons Learned From Our First Trip To The Er

Nobody wants to think about having to take their child to the hospital in an emergency, but kids do get hurt no matter how much babyproofing you do. Last week I had the unfortunate opportunity to take my own 2 1/2 year old son, Holden, to the emergency room after he suffered a bad fall that happened in the blink of an eye. The fall resulted in a Stage 3 Supracondryal Humeral Fracture (fancy term for severely broken elbow) and he wound up in surgery with three pins holding his bones together....

When Are Antibiotics Unsafe During Pregnancy

Even the most cautious moms-to-be can find themselves sick with a virus or infection during pregnancy. And if they do, it’s reassuring that researchers from the University of Montreal recently vetted common antibiotics, finding no link to birth defects. But a new study poses a question: Is it a good idea to take antibiotics the whole way through pregnancy? The European Lung Foundation found that even when confounding factors like a mother’s smoking, asthma or respiratory illness history were accounted for, a link between infant wheezing and taking antibiotics during the third trimester of pregnancy remained....

Am I Eligible For Tax Breaks With Baby

According to Matt Becker, founder of Mom and Dad Money, there are several credits, deductions and exemptions for your growing family. Everyday costs: As of 2014, the IRS gives you a $3,950 exemption for each child, which means you can lower your income by that amount for tax calculation purposes. For example, if you and your husband earn $100,000, you could calculate your taxes based on an income of $96,050. Generally, you can take an exemption for your child if they meet the following criteria: -They are under 19 years of age, or are a full-time student under the age of 24 -They are not filing a joint return or claiming someone else as a dependent on their own return -The child lives with you (with some exceptions) and you provide more than 50% of his or her financial support -No one else is claiming the child as a dependent After that, you may be eligible for an extra $1,000 tax credit for children under 17....

Emergency C Sections Lead To Better Outcomes Than Planned C Sections

While many moms do their best to avoid c-sections, birth doesn’t always go as planned. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing: A new study shows that not all c-sections are created equal. The study, published in Journal of American Medical Associates this month, looked at full-term, firstborn births in Scotland over a 15-year period, tracking babies’ longterm health. And the findings have a major takeaway: Babies delivered via planned c-section have more health problems than those born vaginally or via emergency c-section, in which the mother has already started going into labor....

My Child Is A Picky Eater How Can I Keep Him Healthy

Most toddlers do get proper nutrition when their parents serve a variety of foods — even if it doesn’t always seem that way… But, unlike adults who often eat out of habit or boredom, toddlers only tend to eat when they’re truly hungry. . “Kids are smarter than you think about eating, and they won’t starve themselves,” says Vicki Papadeas, MD, at LaGuardia Place Pediatrics in New York City. “Often they’ll eat in waves—tons of fruits one day, then none the next—and things even out over a week or two....

Nosebleeds also tend to come with colds; so don’t be shocked if one comes while you’re feeling a bit under the weather. (Learn how to prevent colds — safely — here....
